Michael Kowalski-Kostek

• 1931-Born in wloclawek to a wood craft „shnizers-artist” grandfather and father, had one 3 years older sister.(my mom)
• 1935-Family Moved to Konin, Kostek as a 4 years old boy started to practice carving/engraving wood works (as his father and Grandfather) which appeared very useful later on. The Grandfather left to Palestine at that time.

Badr al-Hajj

Photography arrived in Palestine in 1839, the same year in which Daguerre presented the photographic process to the world. In the following decades, the cameras of many European and American photographers regularly photographed Palestine. Photography was taken up as a new craft of Palestine’s local population as early as the 1860s when the Armenian Patriarch Issay Garabedian established a photographic workshop in Jerusalem to train young Armenians.

American Colony in Jerusalem

After suffering a series of tragic losses, Chicago natives Anna and Horatio Spafford led a small American contingent in 1881 to Jerusalem to form a Christian utopian society. The „American Colony,” as it became known, was later joined by Swedish Christians. The society engaged in philanthropic work amongst the people of Jerusalem regardless of religious affiliation, gaining the trust of the local Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities.
